In A New Development Chelsea are set to appoint RB Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund to a similar role at Stamford Bridge with both sides close to reaching an agreement, according to Fabrizio Romano.Blues co-owner and chairman Todd Boehly reportedly acted as an interim sporting director at the club during the summer transfer window after Marina Granovskaia and Petr Cech left their posts as a director and a technical and performance advisor, respectively.

However, ahead of the January transfer window, in which the new ownership group reportedly plans to continue investing heavily in players, Chelsea are said to intend to appoint someone experienced.

There have been several high-profile transfer specialists linked with the sporting director seat at Chelsea, including Paris Saint-Germain football advisor Luis Campos.

But according to Romano, Boehly has made his decision.

RB Salzburg have been informed [that] Christoph Freund is set to reach an agreement with Chelsea, so a deal expected to be completed soon,” the Italian transfer expert wrote on Twitter.

Chelsea are working on it,” he explained.

“He [Freund] is the man they want. They are really close to reaching an agreement on personal terms, so there is an ongoing process to complete everything in the next days.

“RB Salzburg have been informed of this position of Freund’s side that he wants to go to Chelsea and try this new experience.

“Boehly wants to work together with him and Graham Potter.

Potter has also brought his transfer specialist Kyle Macaulay alongside him from Brighton who now works as a recruitment analyst at Chelsea.

Romano also mentioned that Freund has played a crucial role in helping Salzburg acquire talents such as Erling Haaland and Chelsea target Benjamin Sesko.
